Welcome to Language House: a do-it-yourself immersion experiment driven by youth determined to learn and revive Sk̲wx̱wú7mesh sníchim or in English — the Skwomesh language. (The 7 represents a glottal stop or a slight pause.)
The trio moved in together last autumn after the 25-year-old Khelsilem (his traditional Skwomesh name) put a call out to his fellow Squamish Nation members asking who would like to devote themselves to learning their ancestral tongue — by living with him in an immersion-like setting, instead of attending a weekly class.

Jade and striped icebergs. “When seawater at depths of more than 1,200 feet freezes to the underside of massive ice shelves like East Antarctica’s Amery Ice Shelf, it forms ‘marine ice.’ Enormous hunks of ice calve—or break off—from the ice shelf, creating icebergs. When one of these icebergs overturns, its jade underside is revealed. The wondrous color of this ‘marine ice’ results from organic matter dissolved in the seawater at those great depths,” explained Audubon Magazine. “Green icebergs are infrequently seen because their verdant bellies are underwater; it’s only when they flip over, a rare event, that their richly colored regions can be seen before they melt. Striped icebergs, perhaps even more scarce than jade bergs, are thought to form in one of two ways: either meltwater refreezes in crevasses formed atop glaciers before they calve icebergs (creating blue stripes), or seawater freezes inside cracks beneath ice shelves (creating green stripes).”
Le Monde revealed that the leader of the five students (aged 15 to 17) who led a frenzied assault on the Jewish cemetery at Sarre-Union, smashing at least 250 graves (50 graves each), was an Antifa - an antifascist leftist, but as many of his sort, is a Jew-hater. Pierre B. is said to be a vocal enemy of “fascism”. So much so that he wore anti-fascist slogans on his clothes.
This installation by Palestinian artist Emily Jacir commemorates the approximately 30,000 books from Palestinian homes, libraries, and institutions that were looted by Israeli authorities in 1948. Six thousand of these books are kept in stock in Jerusalem under the designation “Abandoned Property.” The artist photographed many of these books, and translated selected handwritten inscriptions to be exhibited on billboards such as this one. The text reads, “This book belongs to its owner Fathallah Saad. He bought it with his own money at the beginning of March 1892.” #Palestine #StreetArt (at The High Line)

this post is disgusting
poor people just can’t catch a goddamn break holy shit
a lot of poor people are part of the klan, the republican party, fascist groups, neonazi organizations, and other terrible things that are socially repressive. they don’t get a free pass on that because they’re poor lmfao
how are the rest of us poor folks impacted by this logic? well gendered, sexualized, racialized violence. Like including countries the United States is imperializing upon. Don’t think communities who are impacted by drone strikes and military violence give a fuck if the drone operator or the soldier is poor tbh

The Ottoman Empire was no less an empire than its British or French or Belgian counterparts. The Ottoman Empire was not diametrically opposite those imperial endeavors and was absolutely not an example of indigenous, non-white, anti-white statebuilding. It was an empire, rigidly hierarchical and brutally violent, monarchal and oppressive and at times genocidal. You do history and those people that suffered (and were destroyed) under Ottoman rule a great disservice in pretending otherwise.

Did the Zionists have the legal or moral right to invade Arab Palestine, uproot its Arab citizens from their homes and seize all Arab property for themselves just based on the “religious” claim that their forefathers lived there thousands of years ago? Only a thousand years ago the Moors lived in Spain. Would this give the Moors of today the legal and moral right to invade the Iberian Peninsula, drive out its Spanish citizens, and then set up a new Moroccan nation … where Spain used to be, as the European zionists have done to our Arab brothers and sisters in Palestine?…
In short the Zionist argument to justify Israel’s present occupation of Arab Palestine has no intelligent or legal basis in history … not even in their own religion.

In the News, Brown children matter when it is time to illustrate grief and suffering. The Brown bodies slaughtered and strewn on the streets of Chicago pepper our screens whenever CNN or the Nightly News decides to feature a segment on them. Yes, we want attention brought to these issues. But, can we do it in a way that respects the deceased? We do see White children on the screen when they go missing, or post-grief, when they have survived a trauma. And it’s usually a static photo from a happier time. In that context, images of White children are displayed with a consistency. To pull us in. To create empathy in our hearts. To keep us alert and on the lookout. White equals sympathy. What is the meaning of a deceased Brown child?

Much like fairy tales, there are two facets of horror. One is pro-institution, which is the most reprehensible type of fairy tale: Don’t wander into the woods, and always obey your parents. The other type of fairy tale is completely anarchic and antiestablishment.

This one time I was in Milan and I’m literally around multi-millionaires and billionaires at this dinner and Dita Von Teese gets on stage and she gets buck naked and she spins around in a big martini glass and everyone clapped for her. And it’s bullshit. It’s not fair that it’s OK for her to do it because she doing it for rich white people but you know I was in like, the hood, and I did what I had to do to survive… and I constantly get ridiculed.
The true cost of drowning only becomes apparent when you return to life. The refracted world you viewed from beneath the ocean shatters over your face as you emerge. You think you’re going to wash up on that same shore you walked into the water from. You think everything remained in place, waiting for your return to spring forward into motion.
Maybe those you loved stood at your corpse with shuttered eyes. Maybe their mouths twisted. Maybe they too felt this unimaginable grief and the helpless sour of yearning. But what did you know of their pain? What did you care what it cost for them to walk away? You were dead, then, and beyond the concerns of the living.
You claw at the sand. You want to be the same girl. But they are walking far beyond you now.
I wrote this post last May, when I intended for this tumblr just to be a dumping ground for me to vent all my fucked up feelings, and then I put this post (and a bunch of others from the same time) on private when it grew into a public blog. But lately my mind keeps returning to those entries, and this one specifically.
The words I wrote here still resonate with me. The pain of those I left and those who left me is not something I believe will ever pass away. Certain wounds are inscribed on the heart and time does nothing to heal them beyond providing a flimsy suture. To look back on years and years of your life and see nothing, only a grey haze of pain where memories should be and empty spaces in the place of people you loved, isn’t easy.
But I no longer regret the paths that lead me here, to this moment, to the person I am now. If crawling back from the sea meant acknowledging that there are people and opportunities I lost forever, it also means the return of emotions and relationships which I thought gone for good. It means the ability to stumble my way forward, across the sands, into the patterns of life that when given time, become not a forced motion but a fact easy as breathing, and more true, and more precious for all that you know what else could be.
I guess I wanted to give this piece a coda, for the sake of the girl who wrote it as she shivered in the dark and with unimaginable strength, pulled herself back from the precipice. As if I could shout across time and distance to give her hope and warmth. As if she might hear me, even for a moment.
I have been trying really hard lately to get my disordered eating under control and it is exhausting trying to do this on my budget and with my time constraints, but I am trying! And I’m doing well so far.

The curious case of Mustafa Mattan is as much a story of intra-racial division and anti-black racism within the Muslim population as it is a narrative about the neglected death of a young man seeking a better life far from home… Despite a few vocal critics, Mattan’s erasure in the discussion of Islamophobia in North America is evident. The exclusion of Mattan and Sheikh-Hussein perpetuates a harmful hierarchy that privileges Arab narratives and excludes black/African Muslims.
So many men have internalized the lie that they have uncontrollable sex drives, and no way to control their anger. They aren’t ashamed of their abusive behavior because they see it as a something natural to them and maybe even central to their masculinity. It’s scary as hell.
Pursuing a young girl as a grown man is high-key manipulative, exploitative, and abusive if we’re 100 percent about it. It’s usually is about molding a young girl into what you want and then you can control them because they don’t have the proper tools to know what equal power looks like in a relationship. Then when it’s over they are left to pick up the pieces.
not saying that misogyny is exclusive to arab culture but as an arab woman it’s really sickening to see how arab culture is so permissive and accepting of basically all male behavior and how women are scrutinized for every move they make.. from where they go/to who they talk to/follow/ their romantic lives etc . these double standards turn men into monsters and are so violent and detrimental in nature so @ arab moms collect your fucking sons please
Put this on my tomb stone after I die from the exhaustion of being an arab girl with four brothers

It is terrifying to think that a white person could murder me in cold blood and the media would exonerate them because I am Muslim. How do I live under the weight of that fear? Can I?
Most of us are raised to believe we will either find love in our first family (our family of origin), or, if not there, in the second family we are expected to form through committed romantic couplings, particularly those that lead to marriage and/or lifetime bondings. Many of us learn as children that friendship should never be seen as just as important as family ties. However, friendship is the place in which a great majority of us have our first glimpse of redemptive love and caring community. Learning to love in friendships empowers us in ways that enable us to bring this love to other interactions with family or with romantic bonds.
This is Dan Uzan, the man who was murdered outside the synagogue last night.
He was standing guard while a bat mitzvah was going on inside. Dan Rosenberg Asmussen, the leader of the Copenhagen Jewish community, said that he protected the synagogue to the end and prevented a massacre from occurring inside.
Dan Uzan is remembered by his friends as the gentle giant “Dan the Man,” who stood at over 6’6” tall and played both soccer for the local Jewish team Hakoah and basketball for the Hørsholm 79ers. He was also known for his decades-long dedication to his community.
His childhood friend, also Daniel, said Uzan was “the man who, when you gave him a hug, you simply disappeared in his giant arms… As a friend, you could always call him, no matter what the time of day. He would always show up. Always.”
I would say, “may his memory be a blessing,” but it is so clear that it already is one.
The stunning Nasir al-mulk Mosque hides a gorgeous secret between the walls of its fairly traditional exterior: stepping inside is like walking into a kaleidoscope of colors. Every day, the rays of the early morning sun shine through colorful stained-glass windows, transforming the halls into a dazzling wonderland of rich hues, patterns, and light that play on the floor of the mosque.
I can never get over that this is a real place.

There’s something that annoys me about male allies who waltz around feminist communities like, “ladies, call me out about anything I do wrong! I’m totally open to critique!” all the time. This is often received with praise but, like, idk…why can’t a women’s lib movement be free to direct all of its energy into women’s lib and not have to divert some of that energy every 20 secs just to correct some usurping male arsehole who decided his time would be better spent hovering in feminist spaces than protesting male violence/porn/etc. in men’s spaces? Some (usually het) women will kiss male arse for being open to being corrected/called out but won’t even stop to think, “okay but why the hell does this dudely dude think it’s somehow mighty nice of him to tell me that I’m welcome to drop what I’m doing and remind him that he’s also a man/is overstepping his bounds/is being inappropriate/etc., as if he’s doing me a favour and not, like, just being a huge annoyance at best and a source of diversion and discomfort for women at worst?” It’s all well and good to be “open to critique”, but critique should be for mixed spaces, no? Why do women have to think about calling men out in feminist spaces of all places? Give us a goddamn break. Leave us alone.
The UAE luxury lifestyle needs to stop being glamorized like it’s something worthy of being attained—the entire structure of this lifestyle is the result of slave labor of south Asian men that are tricked into signing contracts that imprison them in the UAE to face perilous conditions for pennies a day, there is no luxury in the UAE that is not blood spattered with the sacrifices of victims of this slave labor.
I still cannot believe we live in a world where people think Cassandra and Sebastian Vael, and now fucking Krem, are not white. Like, when is DA fandom going to grow up.
you know you could argue…
So non-white characters and white characters can’t have the same background in a fantasy world? White characters can have a narrative that non-white characters inherently can’t? I thought your problem was that all the brown characters had crappy trope backgrounds? (Which I agree with in terms of DA:O and II, btw)
That…is exactly my problem. I’m saying that given the narratives for Krem, Cassandra and Sebastian clearly establish that they are white in Bioware’s view because they don’t have the cliche trope history that Bioware gives their brown and black characters. It’s not a question of whether some characters inherently have a narrative that others can’t, it’s a question of look at the narratives Bioware assigns certain characters and look at the ones who get a different story and what that says. It’s the same as how Bioware portrays all their queer characters (with one exception) as deviant and their morally upright/religious characters are all straight.
I don’t get what is so hard to understand about this but I am ESL so I might be articulating my thoughts wrong.
I still cannot believe we live in a world where people think Cassandra and Sebastian Vael, and now fucking Krem, are not white. Like, when is DA fandom going to grow up.
you know you could argue Cassandra and Sebastian, people…
That’s definitely not the response I was expecting, but we can probably discuss bioware’s racist narrative choices without whitewashing everyone in the cast. To call Cassandra and Krem white is to strip them out of the hands of people who are not white but who identify with them. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a HUGE problem that our only black character with any kind of story is Ser Barris. And most of the inner circle and your advisors are all white. Those are still shitty things. But the answer is probably not to call everyone who’s a shade lighter than Zevran white.
It isn’t…whitewashing to call characters created to be white, white. Even if brown people identify with white chars it doesn’t…make them not white. Do I wish Cassandra and Krem weren’t white? Of course I do. But they don’t look anything like me. You can tell Bioware intended them to be white, that they are treated as white by the narrative, and I still maintain that just insisting “they could be white-passing” or something is bullshit, because it lets Bioware slide and gives them a degree of awareness I guarantee never crossed their minds. Bioware won’t even confirm Fenris is brown, but I’m supposed to believe they had the nuance to create a white-passing character? Nah. Those characters are white and are given the stories they are given because they’re white and to insist on anything else is avoiding the problem.
I still cannot believe we live in a world where people think Cassandra and Sebastian Vael, and now fucking Krem, are not white. Like, when is DA fandom going to grow up.
you know you could argue Cassandra and Sebastian, people do all the time, but Im curious how you see Krems blatant dark skin and think “ah yes look at this white man”
they
are not
white
The thing that BOGGLES MY GODDAMN MIND about the OP’s argument is, what the hell is it to you that they’re not white unless you’re a white supremacist fuckwagon? I mean, if that’s the case, you’re a literal shitbag and there’s no sense debating with you.
Why do you even want to argue that? Why does anyone want to argue the whiteness of any of the characters?? The only answer is racism so if you’re taking that stand maybe you should not.
It matters to me that they are white because every single brown and black char in the games so far has been given a narrative of (often sexual) abuse and slavery. It took us 3 games to get Josephine and she’s not a companion. I have no doubt the next brown and black companions in DA4 will always have horrific histories of abuse and slavery, because that’s the only way Bioware can conceive of us existing, apparently.
But fandom looks at this and then goes “The solution to this is to take these white chars, clearly intended to be white by their creators, and pretend they aren’t white! That totally makes up for the meta-racism that pervades Thedas.”
No. I’m not satisfied with that. White people like Cassandra get to be the heroes in Thedas, with an ideology and a desire for justice. People who look like me are Zevran—the companion you can kill before even recruiting him. Fandom sticking their head in the sand and pretending that’s not so instead of putting pressure on Bioware to change almost pisses me off more than Bioware themselves.
You guys can recognize the bullshit that all straight chars in Bioware are coded as morally upright/non deviant/religious (Cullen, Alistair, Sebastian, Cassandra) but apparently discussing the shitty treatment brown and black chars get is taboo because god forbid white people have to do an ounce of critical thinking about their faves when instead they can pretend their faves aren’t white and it’s all ok.
I still cannot believe we live in a world where people think Cassandra and Sebastian Vael, and now fucking Krem, are not white. Like, when is DA fandom going to grow up.
you know you could argue Cassandra and Sebastian, people do all the time, but Im curious how you see Krems blatant dark skin and think “ah yes look at this white man”
Holy shit. Krem is not dark-skinned. Have you ever seen a brown person irl?? We aren’t just white people with a tan like half of Bioware fandom seems to think and Krem doesn’t even fall under that sad definition of brown.
LMAO. I’m not trying to push Krem as white, I’m just fucking tired of Bioware fandom deciding that the solution to the game’s shitty racist treatment of all the brown and black characters is to pretend their white faves AREN’T white.

Also good for the kids. They encourage having slow readers read to the family pets. A dog will listen to a kid read a whole book one damn sssyl-la——-ble at a time, and it will never get frustrated, or correct their pronunciation, or start playing Angry Bird because it can’t stand listening to the slowness any more. The dog will look at the kid approvingly, because, human. Human is talking. Human is interacting.
So this is a great win-win.
I’ve seen this used with great effects with a few kids I used to mentor. They had stammering or reading issues, brought in a dog and within an hour, they were completely relaxed.
Leo and Sophia (the therapy dogs) just laid there and loved every second. Thought those kids hung the moon, and the feeling was mutual.
It doesn’t makes sense, and for that I rely on the Most Wise. It hurts and for that I know that God will not burden me more than I can handle. I know my brother, his wife, and his sister in law are together as ultimate winners. This life was only ever a test and they have passed with flying colors. They have won, and for that I rejoice. I am sincerely happy for each of them. I pray God grants the rest of us the patience to accept this. We live as Muslims to die as Muslims. May Allah enter them to the highest of paradise. May we be reunited with them. The burden is on us now. O people, they won! They won!

Muslims in the United States are more often the victims of ideological violence than the perpetrators of it.
According to the latest FBI statistics, there were more than 160 anti-Muslim hate crimes in 2013. Mosques and Islamic centers have been firebombed and vandalized; seven mosques were attacked during Ramadan alone in 2012. Several Muslims, or people thought to be Muslim, have been murdered or viciously attacked. In 2010, a white college student and self-described patriot tried to slash the throat of Bangladeshi cab driver Ahmed Sharif. The white supremacist who slaughtered six people in a Sikh temple in 2012 may have thought he was targeting Muslims. So, apparently, did Erika Menendez, the homeless New Yorker who pushed a man named Sunando Sen in front of a subway train that same year.
In most cases, the perpetrators have been disaffected, disaffiliated losers rather than part of any movement, but they’ve picked up broader currents of hatred and conspiracy theorizing… We don’t yet know if Hicks was driven by lonely fanaticism, but if he was, he’s not as much of an anomaly as he might at first appear. Explicitly atheist violence is unusual, but Hicks still fits the profile of the most common type of American terrorist: a white man with a weapon and a grudge
