Noisey asked me to write about some stuff, so I wrote about my existence in Hardcore/Punk, Ferguson and the Angry Black Woman trope. Please go read the whole thing!
“You know, people joke all the time about the Angry Black Woman, but fail to realize why we’re angry, and what or who we’re actually angry at. Instead, everyone rolls with the stereotype that they’ve been fed and applies it anytime a Black woman dares to express herself. I couldn’t tell you how many times white punks and metal nerds have said, “Kayla from Bleed the Pigs is too aggressive and angry. Why is she so tense all the time?”
Think about it.
My anger as a Black woman fronting an aggressive, politically charged hardcore/metal band with DIY punk ethics is somehow too much for them. White punks screaming about the same politics, the same fucked-up shit, and even about racial issues and injustices they don’t even particularly face, are wholeheartedly accepted, never questioned, never told to tone down, and never told to relax. No matter how justified I am, or how down for the cause they are, they’re put off by my very valid rage. Why is that? What is it about a Black girl doing the same shit white men do that makes them feel like it’s too much? How am I the only one being labeled too aggressive in a genre that is all aboutaggression?”

would an anarcho-communist society still have prisons?
Short answer - no.
Long answer - I have no problem with societies collectively deciding some kind of coercive limits on people who pose a direct and provable danger - peadophiles, rapists, serial killers etc… Anarchism doesn’t mean you get free reign to abuse people without consequence, and I’d imagine that different communities would come up with different strategies to deal with these kind of direct threats, which I don’t think can be adequately handled without coercive force. These are a tiny proportion of prisoners though, and although I don’t think a liberated society would be free of this sort of behaviour entirely, I do think the proportion would get drastically smaller when people are raised and supported in an environment of mutual respect and open communication where their immediate needs are met etc.
This sort of protective function is categorically not what prisons are though, prisons are vast institutions of social control which are there to discipline us, not protect us. The fact that a small number of very dangerous individuals are kept away from society in prisons is nothing compared with the massive social harm they do to entire communities, inside and out, acting as fortresses of racial and class warfare, creating anti-social behaviour, stigmatizing, institutionalising, destroying families, disciplining the labour force etc. They don’t protect us from crime, they are crime

Merrill was such a failure of a character. She could have shown us that blood magic isn’t evil and that it can be used for good - but her whole story arc was basically “La la ~ I am so innocent~ Oops, a demon took advantage of meee! Help, Hawke!” And that’s it. She came across as stupid and naive. And she did nothing to improve my opinion of blood magic.
You are so wrong I can’t even begin to tell you how wrong you are.
Merrill was firmly aware of the price she was paying making a deal with a demon, but she had decided that what she would be regaining for her clan would be worth that price.
When she calls on Hawke to help her out in Act 3, it’s to put an end to her if something goes wrong. I’d say that’s pretty damn responsible.
She’s not innocent. Merrill knows exactly what she’s doing. More than Anders does, definitely. More than Orsino does, more than Marethari does.
You are wrong about Merrill and you should feel bad about it.
(I really have to talk about Merrill someday.)
This.
Merrill’s characterisation in DA2, like a lot of the characters and issues in DA2, took advantage of stereotypes in western fiction. It subverted our expectations and used them against us.
In a stereotypical western fantasy story, Merrill would have fucked up. She would have overestimated her own strength and failed against the demon.
But here’s the thing: that doesn’t happen.
She doesn’t fuck up. She doesn’t slip up. And she doesn’t slip because she knows precisely how dangerous her chosen path actually is, and she guards against it. She doesn’t overestimate her strength, and she doesn’t underestimate the demon’s strength.
All the way through DA2, I was waiting for the other shoe to drop with Merrill. And then the other shoe did drop, and it wasn’t Merrill.
It was Anders.
Merrill was the red herring. She went into her deal with the demon with her eyes wide open, and I think her innocence was a deliberate choice on the part of the writers to make us assume that her choices were naive. She does have a good deal of naivete, but all of it is to do with humans and cities - when it comes to magic, she is far more knowledgeable and powerful than anyone else in the group, including Anders.
Because Anders was the one who let a spirit into his body and thought everything would be all right. Anders was the one who changed himself irrevocably through good intentions and wishful thinking. Merrill also had good intentions, but she didn’t rely on wishful thinking to guard her. She took multiple precautions against demonic possession, up to and including asking Hawke to kill her if those precautions failed. Anders just closed his eyes and hoped for the best, then retreated into denial when it became apparent that hoping for the best hadn’t worked.
Merrill is living proof that it is possible to use blood magic and not be tainted by it. She’s also living proof that fear of blood magic from other people can cause more damage than blood magic itself.
Merrill’s storyline would have been vastly different if Marethari had been a little less condemning and a little more neutral - Pol would be alive if Marethari hadn’t spread stories about Merrill and demons, for one thing, and Marethari herself might not have chosen to be possessed if she had allowed herself to trust Merrill even a little bit.
Honestly, if you think Merrill is stupid and naive, or that she let a demon take advantage of her, you either haven’t finished the game yet or you weren’t paying attention.
This is really good commentary

I’ve told the kids in the ghettos that violence won’t solve their problems, but then they ask me, and rightly so; “Why does the government use massive doses of violence to bring about the change it wants in the world?” After this I knew that I could no longer speak against the violence in the ghettos without also speaking against the violence of my government.

God forbid you could have a normal civilized discussion about all the things that happened in the Brown case, and wether the outcome was right. No. Everyone MUST side with Brown or else you’re a literal nazi-white-supremacist-racist shit lord!
No shit
Keep up the Ferguson posts, but remember: DO NOT make posts about how Darren Wilson or the justice system are heartless, don’t have empathy, etc. because those are ableist as shit.
There are loads of mental illnesses that cause a lack in empathy and caring, so do not fucking DARE compare us to filth like Wilson and the justice system.
The liberal, then, is one who sees “both sides” of the issue and shies away from “extremism” in any form. He wants to change the heart of the racist without ceasing to be his friend; he wants progress without conflict.

Imagine all the impressionable black kids who are watching Obama on TV right now hoping for a semblance, a shred, an iota of empathy or reason because POTUS is a black man but their hopes are scrapped and dissemble into shards of resentment when he says that “we need to accept the verdict” of being considered with less weight than house cats in the judicial system when our people are snuffed out by law enforcement daily.
This is why we need to teach our youth that bourgeois elites who happen to have x marginalized identities, especially those elected to uphold fundamentally and perpetually oppressive roles are not, can not and will not ever be on board with revolutionary struggles or thought.

It’s not self-pity that keeps me returning to that sad place. It’s the conviction that there is something valuable in the body-memory of slamming up against a biological limit – of running out of second, third, and fourth chances – something we all need to learn. Hitting the wall didn’t dispel my belief in healing and recovery. It just taught me that these gifts require a special kind of nurturing, and a constant vigilance about the limit beyond which life cannot be pushed.
Because the truth is that humans are marvelously resilient, capable of adapting to all manner of setbacks. We are built to survive, gifted with adrenaline and embedded with multiple biological redundancies that allow us the luxury of second, third and fourth chances. So are our oceans. So is the atmosphere.
But surviving is not the same as thriving, not the same as living well. And as we have seen, for a great many species, it’s not the same as being able to nurture and produce new life. Just because biology is full of generosity does not mean its forgiveness is limitless. With proper care, we stretch and bend amazingly well. But we break too – our individual bodies, as well as the communities and ecosystems that support us.

4,000 could die building Qatar World Cup
The 2022 World Cup in Qatar is more than eight years away, but the human costs of preparing for the event are already piling up.
Qatar is expect to spend $100 billion on new infrastructure in the lead-up to the World Cup, and it’s been importing millions of much-needed migrant workers to do the construction. Most of these workers are from developing regions of South Asia — Nepal, India, Bangladesh, etc. — and they go to Doha in the hopes of a better life. Instead, what they find is akin to “modern-day slavery.”
Though the Qatar World Cup committee has denied human rights abuses, emerging reports indicate flagrant disregard for human life. Plus, it’s already on track to be the deadliest sporting event in history, taking the title from the previous record-holder: the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

I don’t understand how someone can have a souped up car and still live in the projects
Because it’s cheaper to buy rims and shit than it is to save up a deposit to get a better home. Because a tax refund can buy you something nice but can’t replace the job and salary you need to get a better home. Or because we’re taught that visible indicators of wealth make us better than we are. Like, there’s plenty of reasons, sis, they’re pretty simple.
To begin by always thinking of love as an action rather than a feeling is one way in which anyone using the word in this manner automatically assumes accountability and responsibility.

I agree with you that academia is hard to get into regardless of education (it's basically entering decades old conversations and expecting to understand it immediately) but there are problems with how academia structures their writing that is purposefully wordy and convoluted.
i mean for starters, academia is not just one person and one voice and one writing style- academic texts fill a range. i’m not really sure what exactly you mean by “purposefully wordy and convoluted”- is this in reference to the specific vocabulary used in areas of study? because then it’s not so much a matter of it being purposefully difficult but a matter of it using specific language for the field.
like if i wrote a paper on brain surgery, i would be using specific vocab that people who know about brain surgery would understand because that’s the language the field of brain surgery uses to communicate thoughts and ideas. it’s really no different in philosophical texts or any other field of study.
And honestly, I think what people tend to ignore is that, in many cases, these ideas become published by high-level academics and over the years those filter in undergraduate readings and syllabi and those undergrads share those ideas with totally unaffiliated friends. Ideas move and get shared, and that’s okay.
So much of the language you see on tumblr today (even if, as I’d say, it gets misused often) comes from academics. We got the word “hegemonic” from Raewyn Connell, an Australian trans woman who works in sociology and has worked in academia since the 1970s. We got the word “performativity” from Butler, who’s accused of being excessively hard to read- yet performativity is a pretty broadly understood concept. We got the word “intersectionality” from Kimberle Crenshaw, who is not always a particularly easy read. We got the solidification of the idea of “dialectics” from Hegel, who I often have to read many, many times over to fully understand. We got “misogynoir” from Moya Bailey, who I believe blogs on tumblr in addition to being a scholar with (I believe) a PhD. The understanding of feminism as a politic rather than a lifestyle choice was popularized (though not created) by bell hooks, who doesn’t always write in terribly accessible language. Like, we’ll get it anyway and these ideas filter around, rather than remaining static on a page. People talk and trade ideas.
The problem is the idea that words on a paper, rather than guiding us in understanding something, will spark sudden calls to action. I don’t think that if you just wrote The Communist Manifesto over today in more modern English than anyone with fluency in English could read, we would suddenly have a full communist revolution tomorrow. Just giving people exposure to an idea can change their worldview, and that’s important, but it doesn’t translate into revolutionary action. How many leftists do I know who circle jerk over dusty books and do nothing but talk about dead theory? A whole bunch. I also know many activists who’ve never read Marx, or Kropotkin, etc etc, who would be thrown off by the word “dialectics” but who are doing great work organizing workers on the ground in their own workplaces and across the country. So I think generally we need to move away from the idea everyone seems to HATE until it gets applied to people who work in academia- the idea that the working class must and will be led by a single revolutionary group. Anytime someone brings up unionism on this site, I see cries of the dreaded V A N G A U R D I S M, but when academics don’t claim that their work is going to spark revolution the second it’s published, they’re awful people for not making work everyone can read. It isn’t intended to be read by everyone- it is intended to be read by people working specifically within a certain field and who are already comfortable with a certain vocabulary. That’s the entire basis of the peer-reviewed journal: your scholarly peers review your work, talk about it, and then pass it on to your other scholarly peers. What gets done with it is 1- not a concern for many academics who just love the work they do and 2- not up to that academic.

I prefer winter and fall, when you can feel the bone structure in the landscape — the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it; the whole story doesn’t show.
—Andrew Wyeth, from a Life Magazine interview, 1965
next time someone tells you fast food/retail workers don’t deserve a union because they’re kids and immigrants, remind them that virtually everyone employed in factories during the gilded age were young children, young women, and immigrants. fast forward to today, and unions have made factory jobs safe careers that pay family-supporting wages.
No they shouldn’t get one because it will only lead to the higher exploitation of third word workers who are used to create those basic commodities used by those “workers”.
This whole glorification of the fast food/retail “worker” movement stems from first worldist fantasies of them being under a great yoke of exploitation and form a bastion of revolution.
This is a lie. This movement is about as revolutionary as the ISO, CPUSA, and IWW. A raise in the minimum wage only goes to further “develop” Amerikan LA’s while increasing the exploitation of the masses of the earth.

u know i dont think its a coincidence that anarchists and fascists use practically the same bourgeois mythology (holodomor!!! 1000000000000 dead!!) to discredit Stalin
you know i don’t think it’s a coincidence that tankies and fascists use practically the same mythology (just liberal lies!! real academics say it didn’t happen!!) to deny genocide.
Some women’s liberationists encouraged women to believe that their individual achievements of success, money, and power (especially in spheres historically dominated by men) advance feminist movement. These women need to know their success has little impact on the social status of women collectively and does not lessen the severity of sexist oppression or eliminate male domination. Their individualism is dangerously narcissistic when it leads them to equate personal success with radical political movement. Individual achievements advance feminist movement if they serve the interests of collective feminist struggle as well as satisfying individual aspirations.

A Marxist-Leninist-Maoist professor at an Ivy League school was giving a lecture on the Russian Revolution. “I challenge any student,” he said, “to tell me how a revolution can occur without a vanguard party.” A heroic student from the back of the classroom stood up and ripped open his flannel to reveal a shirt emblazoned with the words “SPAIN 1936.” Pensively, in a soft voice, he answered: “you just think the workers are stupid.” The professor was visibly shaken. He furiously began beating his desk with his copy of the official USSR-censored Collected Works of Vladimir Lenin while reciting the Constitution of the CPSU.
That student was Noam Chomsky
Rebellious Catalan vote rocks Spanish establishment
On November 9, 2.305 million residents of Catalonia defied a November 4 Spanish Constitutional Court ban and voted on what future political status they wanted for their country, which is presently one of the 17 “autonomous communities” (regional governments) within the Spanish state.
This “participatory process” presented voters with the same ballot paper as the original non-binding consultation that had been adopted by the Catalan parliament on September 26. That too had been suspended by the Spanish Constitutional Court on appeal by the national government of People’s Party (PP) Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.
After this first legal veto the Catalan minority government of right-nationalist party Convergence and Union (CiU) adopted a substitute ballot for November 9, one that had more the status of a mass survey of public opinion than a formal plebiscite.
Yet the double-barreled question asked was still the same:
(1) Do you want Catalonia to become a state?
(2) If yes, do you want that state to be independent?
The near-final results of the poll were 1.86 million (80.76% of voters) for independence, 232,000 (10.07%) for Catalan statehood but not independence, 105,000 (4.54%) for no change in Catalonia’s status and 107,000 (4.62%) either offering other suggestions or spoiling the voting paper.
Participation exceeded the most optimistic expectations of the organisers, who had informally set 1.5 million as a respectable target. Initiative for Catalonia-Greens (ICV) co-coordinator Joan Herrera called it “the biggest demonstration in the history of this country”. The unprecedented turnout was one more powerful act of Catalan mass protest, defying not only the Constitutional Court’s ban but Spanish state intimidation.
This included the refusal of the national Post Office to deliver material related to November 9, requests from the national prosecutor’s office for the names and addresses of school principals and others charged with opening their workplaces as voting centres, heavy hints that the national prosecutor might require the Catalan regional police to close the centres down and intimidatory letters to national civil servants warning them not to act as volunteers in any “illegal activity”.

what's the anarchist solution to drug-trafficking, mafias, and organised crime tho?
haha well the abolition of private property ought to do it
If you’re coming at this from the perspective of ‘we need a state to fight drug trafficking, organised crime etc’, I’d put it to you that there is a reason why every state formation ends up inextricably tangled up in organised crime networks - it’s because they both operate according to the same logic, they are both structures organised through hierarchy, coercion, secrecy, tribute, surveillance, the control of specific territory etc etc. States and organised crime networks are a good fit, they understand each other and work according to the same basic principles, which is why they so readily and easily mesh together everywhere they exist.
Anarchism is about organising in the exact opposite way from states and mafias, with the maximum possible decentralisation of power, transparency and popular participation. You can have a different kind of state and still have the mafia, but you can’t have a social revolution and still have the mafia, because the social revolution is about exploding the subordinating coercive relationship between people that states and mafia gangs rely on to function.
see i’d love for this to be true but someone once made a very good argument when i argued this, and it goes as follows: Someones gonna get some guns. Someones gonna want some territory, under their control. Humans have these territorial inclinations. We could have a totally decentralized, popular participatory society, but some motherfucker is going to get a gun and push some people around. Unless each neighborhood/community has an elected, representative security organization. Even if thats a thing, what’s to stop them from starting to run shit? What if, when they come up for re-election (even if its changed every month) they decide to say fuck that and start oppressing?
I’d like to think every single anarchist with a gun is a reason why that person won’t get very far.
but also the problem here is assuming that human behaviors are natural and not naturalized
this alleged innate desire for us to divide and own land and resources has a lot more to do with our acclimation to the current status quo than it does some mythical biological urge to own property- besides, were we not once largely nomadic?
capitalism has influenced a lot more than just our bank accounts- it has had a fundamental impact on our society and how we treat and view each other and ourselves. the destruction of capitalism would also incur a radical restructuring of society, collective values and consciousness, and our own experience with the world. there wouldn’t be anyone hoarding all the resources ‘just cuz’ because it wouldn’t be a desire that’s replicated socially and because there would be no functioning need for it
the question often comes up about what we would do in communism if something related to capital were to happen, and really, the simplest answer is “this wouldn’t happen”. in communism, you’re not going to have stealing or unequal distribution of resources because it’s antithetical to the whole “communism” thing. like, there’s no need to steal if all your basic needs are met and there’s no larger structure in place that encourages excess and violence.
Ancient Greeks favoured homosexuality not because they were oh so tolerant but because they were misogynists and believed you should only have sex with women for the sake of procreation and lesbians were banned can everyone please stop glorifying that now…

aro hets r queer and ace hets r queer and het kinksters r queer and het dudes that once accidentally brushed their hand against their bros hand can reclaim queer and anyone that feels like calling themselves queer is queer and queer means nothing except insofar as it makes me not trust anyone who describes themselves as queer
I am eternally amused by how much Alistair and Morrigan hate each other, because you guys, they are so alike in so many important ways.
- Both grew up in abusive households where their emotional needs were neglected.
- Both were only valued for the way their blood could further their parental figures’ ambitions.
- Both go out of their way to downplay the effect of parental abuse on them, insisting that they’re fine, yep, totally fine, have they mentioned fine today, because FINE, hahaha what grand times they had locked in a cage or acting as bait for the Templars.
- Both adopt exaggerated personas to avoid the vulnerability that comes with being genuine.
- Both are socially awkward and tend to isolate themselves further through odd behavior.
- Both latch on to the Warden as the first and maybe only genuine relationship (friendship or romance) they will ever have.
Come to think about it, that’s probably why they hate each other so much.
idek how any woman can stan eminem when all he does is consistently rap about his hatred of women like he literally fantasises about killing women in very violent ways… where is the self love¿
His newer stuff confronts his old, sexist, misogynistic ways and literally kills it.
It’s really amazingly good. At least the song I’ve heard. (Can’t remember what it’s called rn)
You can’t remember cause you lying
I’v had a lot of headcanons about those two when it comes to that missing period of time between the end of the war and before Sasuke leaves again.
Just saying, they seemed awwwwwfully close at the end of 699, which got me thinking that they had to have spent a lot of time catching up.
And here we have a Sasuke who is allowing himself to Feel Very Good Things while Sakura explains a complicated medical jutsu to him.
rubeus remus potter not albus severus
can you imagine hagrid’s reaction?? he would be so so so happy and honoured, little rubeus would be getting rock cakes all the time. hagrid buys him his first owl to keep with tradition. hagrid tells him stories about all his dangerous animals and rubeus potter loves it. he gets nicknamed ‘ru’
someone carve this shit in stone because holy fUCK
oppressors paint famous radicals as soft pacifists because they know quiet rebellion (read: quiet acceptance of the system) won’t get us anywhere. if you manage to convince someone that their hero was peaceful and kind even in the face of oppression, you manage to squash rebellion before it can rise up.

Tribute to Sakura Haruno: Housewife, Kunoichi, Strongest Medical-nin, Fighter, Lover, Mother and Wife."Women have to be strong in order to survive"
Me: there's actually hundreds of books by hundreds of people written over two centuries that are filled with positive proposals
Liberal: literally nothing theres nothing out there
Every night I have a special supplication for all the mothers out there who are stuck in abusive marriages and do not have the means to leave. For a lot of them, leaving would mean not seeing or being able to take care of their kids. We need to remember them. They should be our communities’ top priority.

I’m a spy. Not some rooftop-jumping archer, shield-wielding super-soldier or shiny-metal philanthrobot

You were asleep. I wake you. The vast morning brings the illusion of a beginning. You had forgotten Virgil. Here are the hexameters. I bring you many things. The four Greek elements: earth, water, fire, air. The single name of a woman. The friendship of the moon. The bright colors of the atlas. Forgetting, which purifies. Memory, which chooses and rediscovers. The habits which help us to feel we are immortal. The sphere and the hands that measure elusive time. The fragrance of sandalwood. The doubts that we call, not without some vanity, metaphysics. The curve of the walking stick the hand anticipates. The taste of grapes and of honey.
Zevran “anyone up for a little naked cliff diving” Arainai, unknowingly trying to seduce a lesbian target and getting his drink poured over his head.
Zevran “falling down a flight of stairs is an adventure” Arainai, being sent to kill a Circle mage and instead tripping his way down the entire tower.
Zevran “you’re no master assassin” Arainai, trying to unsheathe his daggers and hitting himself in the face, twice.
Zevran “i’ll flirt while lying in a pool of my own blood with the person who put me there” Arainai, trying and failing to pick a lock, then getting hit in the face when someone opens the door.
Zevran “i have faith that my friends will one day stab me in the back” Arainai, trying to poison a target and instead accidentally poisoning someone else instead, who then somehow pushes his actual target down a flight of break neck stairs, so mission sort of accomplished.
Zevran “what a remarkable amount of lava. do you think anyone ever falls in?” Arainai, trying to shoot his target with a crossbow and giving himself a black eye with the kick back.
Really Average Assassin Zevran Arainai
