I hate all white Lavellans, but I think I wouldn’t hate them (at least as much) if they didn’t have vallaslin.
Like. Why would you think its OK to have your character wear indigenous tattoos…. and then make them white?
Nothing in this post makes any sense.
Your about me says…
Vallaslin was literally stolen from real-life indigenous people. That’s what I’m saying and I’ve made several posts about it before. I think you might be able to find it under ‘vallaslin’ on my blog, but I’m not sure. One post I made lists in high detail exactly what patterns were stolen from where and why it’s a problem. It may be ‘indigenous to all elves’ in game but it sure as fuck isn’t in the real world—it was literally stolen from indigenous people and stripped of all meaning.
And my about says I’m white and Ojibwe, so what the fuck did you read?
I read your post highlighting the similarities and I don’t really see anything that’s worse than any other fantasy fiction drawing similarities from real life cultures? Actually the thing that’s making me most uncomfortable here is how you are doing exactly what you’re claiming Bioware is guilty of—lumping together all of these cultures and stripping them of meaning. Like you have literally smushed South Asian, North African, Indigenous American cultures and many more together and labeled them all under the same “cultures of color having their meaning stolen by white people” narrative without any allowance for nuance or the individual stories of those cultures or their histories. It’s the typical lumping together of PoC on tumblr into one vast monolith that gives me heartburn.
Like, I can’t speak for any other form of tattooing you’ve mentioned, but the main reason facial tattooing is scarce in Morocco, the reason my cousins apply it with henna instead of permanently isn’t because of white people, it’s because Islam forbids it. But did you know that when you listed off North African facial tattooing as one of your check marks for why vallaslin is Bad? No. You were just using my people to round out your call out post.
You also have a fundamental misunderstanding of what blackface is. Or you’re being intellectually dishonest on purpose, but I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt. Like literally in one breath you’re claiming that it’s blackface to do the vallaslin, but then you also claim the vallaslin is a real indigenous tattoo that was stolen. If it’s the latter it isn’t the former, and if it’s the former it isn’t the latter.
Also your bio reads like tumblrspeak for “I have a native american great-grandmother”, sorry. You literally state in it “I benefit from white supremacy and have white privilege.” I sympathize wtih being separated from a part of your heritage because of oppression more than you know, but that’s why I don’t claim to identify as Rroma, just to have Rroma heritage.
