It’s International Women’s Day and many disabled women are unable to access the health care we desperately need. We have difficulty getting our needs met across the board, but especially in reproductive care. Here are some things I thought about during my most recent gynecological appointment (pictured!):
- 80% of women with disabilities have been sexually assaulted.
- Over 30 states in America have involuntarily sterilized people with disabilities. More info
- That women with disabilities are still being involuntarily sterilized
- The way we get pushed around in Pro-Choice discussion.
- I am sexual; I have sex, I need sex, I need sexual health care.
- There are invisible illnesses that affect the reproductive system and it’s difficult to get care for them
We’re overdue for this care. Drop a note to your local representatives /senators and send something to Planned Parenthood too, if you can.
